Getting to Know Your Doormen

Val - Older man, addresses all of the residents by name. Usually works mornings, mid-day shifts. Pretty territorial about his building. He's gotta know your name! Likes chatting with his residents. Telling stories about his close encounter with death (he was hit by a bus last year !!!!!). Gets a sense of your schedule: "Do you have dance practice tonight?" etc.

Robert - Younger, works day or night. Always tells everyone to "have a good day!" (or night). He's the doorman you want to be working when you have a party.

"Doc" - also older, works fewer shifts, not around as much


Uncle Sam - older, from Jamaica, works the night shift, always giving us advice about being careful in the city, always up for chatting for a few min or a few hours when you get home from a night out


3:30 am, Sat 2/20:

The nightshift doorman, "uncle sam," shows us 2 pictures taped behind the post - "STALKER, DO NOT LET UP." Apparently he's been following a resident of the building for some time now.

Sam tells us how he doesn't want to be responsible for people like this guy. As the nightshift doorman, he's seen many of them in action.

As he's talking, a resident comes through the lobby and goes out into the city. The resident just kind of stares at us as he walks out. When the doors close behind him, Sam is quick to add. "See that guy? He's a freak. Always leaving at all hours of the night. He doesn't sleep. He'll bring any girl he finds on the street home with him. "

Then reiterates how we have to be careful when we're out... Thanks for caring Sam!
